Black Eyed Peas Break Singles Chart Record

The group has spent 20 weeks on the top of the Billboard singles chart, a new record. I’ve pulled up the graph of their plays over the past month and it appears that their decline in online activity over the last couple of weeks (not unusual for the vacation-filled end of summer) hasn’t hurt their chart position in the slightest.
Their first single from E.N.D., Boom Boom Pow, spent 12 weeks in the top spot and was replaced by their second single, I’ve Gotta Feeling. The group joins an elite group of 11 artists that have held the number 1 and 2 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 at the same time.
Look for their internet activity to pick up in the fall as they kick off their live tour Sept. 15th in support of their latest record.
Maybe I was blinded back in the day by a few songs like "Hey Mama", but I can barely tolerate these guys anymore.
"I Got A Feeling" currently has over 60x more plays on Lala than some of the other tracks from that album. Can we glean anything about them from statistics like that? Clearly they have a HUGE megahit…but no one is making it through the rest of the album. Thoughts?
Thanks for pointing that out Ryan.
They've definitely seemed to move more and more mainstream with each record. I remember Bridging The Gap and Behind The Front as great underground hip-hop (this was in the days before Fergie joined the group).
It's not unusual for a single to carry an entire album, though that ratio of 60x seems quite high? With the availability of digital singles, hopefully the days of album "filler" are numbered.
As we add data sources and bands it will be fascinating to calculate what that ratio typically looks like (single vs. least played track on an album). We will be sure to share the findings right here on this blog.
Hey, just curious – how do you intend to make money from this service? It looks great, I checked it out last year when it was 'moguls' and so on – the stats are cool and it seems like a super-huge version of wearehunted – but your stats are free and there are no ads – are you waiting for traction and then intending to roll-out a revenue model?
Cheers,
Jake
Thanks for the kind words Jake, our old fantasy record mogul site has actually moved to tnbsound.com.
In terms of revenue model for this new site, the stats you see will remain free. We make money selling context and recommendations around this basic data to band managers, labels and other industry professionals. Happy to chat further if you'd like more specifics.
